Juniper Publishers - Design and Application of a High-performance True Triaxial Stress Cell

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract Conventional triaxial tests are for axisymmetric stress condition, which is not necessarily correct for deep rock layers. Thus, orthotropic stress conditions and pore pressure are better simulated by new generation of high-performance True Triaxial Stress Cell (TTSC). New TTSC in Curtin university allows stresses up to 70 MPa on a 50×50×50mm cube of the rock sample. Additionally, pore pressure can be up to 20 MPa and temperature up to 70oC. Six sets of LVDT strain gauges and 24 acoustic transducers can monitor all deformations and crack events during fracturing of a sample. Through a hole in the center of the rock, a fluid can be injected to simulate hydraulic fracturing, or investigate fault reactivation during fluid injection. All of events are monitored in real-time manner using ultrasonic seismic transducers around the sample. Further details of this equipment are explained in this paper. Keywords: True Triaxia...

Juniper Publishers - Mineral Association, Gold Mineralization and Deposit Type of The Reza Gold Deposit (Gedabek Ore District, Lesser Caucasus, Azerbaijan)

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract In article described Reza gold deposit of Ugur exploration area located in Gedabek Ore District of the Lesser Caucasus in NW of Azerbaijan. It is established that high quality gold is observed in the following mineral association: oxide mineralization; transition zone mineralization; sulfide mineralization. The high-grade gold observed in the following mineral association: barite-hematite-quartz-kaoline; hematite-quartz-kaoline; barite-sulfide-quartz. The low-grade gold observed in the following mineral association: disseminated pyrite; stock-stockwork pyrite; disseminated and veinlets covellite-pyrite (+/- turquoise) mineral associations. Deposit alteration signature has characteristics which suggest the current outcrop level may be near the top of a mineralized, gold-bearing high sulfidation epithermal (HSE) system. The gold mineralization at the deposit is interpreted as forming in shallow high sulfidation epit...

Juniper Publishers - Exploring Innovative Teaching Techniques in Higher Institutions in Cameroon – A Case Study of the Catholic University Institute of Buea, The Growth Entrepreneurial Mindset University

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract Innovative or creative teaching is known to nurtures students’ creative potential and this requires four competencies namely learning, social, educational, and technological which involves the preparedness and readiness to learn, communicate with others from different backgrounds, passion and knowledgeability, and finally the use of technology to further student understanding. While there are clearly significant benefits to innovative teaching methods, there is a need for caution too in our fast-paced digital world where students have an extensive amount of visual information to hand throughout the day and night. Selflessness is also a factor when trying to innovate and innovation is not carrying a single idea to a predetermined destination and at some point, innovation must be inclusive. The Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB) as a professional university has taken the bold step to be the premier game ch...

Juniper Publishers - Capture Characteristics of Combinative Rod Matrix in High Gradient Magnetic Separation

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract The single diameter rod matrix is now widely applied for high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) of weakly magnetic ores, due to its resistance to clogging, simple combinatorial optimization and high operational reliability. The capture characteristics of a combinative rod matrix, which consists of different diameter rod elements, were investigated during the pulsating HGMS of ilmenite concentrate. The results indicate that the combinative matrix was able to achieve simultaneous magnetic capture improvement to fine and coarse ilmenite particles under the suitable operating conditions, compared with the single diameter rod matrices. The magnetic induction and pulsating frequency of the pulsating HGMS process have their effects on the capture performance of the combinative matrix. The capture performance of the combinative matrix improves with increase in the magnetic induction, particularly for -21μm fine ilmenites...

Juniper Publishers - Challenges of Biohydrometallurgy in the Circular Economy

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Opinion The sustainable management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is considered a challenge, given the fastest increasing stream of waste in the world. Natural resource exploitation is accelerating in the face of resource decline, while at the same time people are generating ever-growing fluxes of wastes and pollutants [1]. WEEE can be considered as a source of various metallic and nonmetallic components including critical or strategic materials for the development of new high technologies. Considering the ever-present possibility of depletion of non-renewable resources, the economic benefits of recovering valuable metals from the recycling of WEEE are potentially important in the coming decades. Metal ores stem from non-renewable resource stocks; and predictions as to how long metal world reserves will last depend mainly on economic growth, price trends and technological development [2,3]. The circular...

Juniper Publishers - Plasma Extraction of Metals in Space

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract Extraction of purified metals from extraterrestrial materials can be accomplished in several ways, such as beneficiation, hydrogen reduction, recovery of spent rockets, direct melting of iron meteorites, and plasma isotope separation. Presented here is a method for multiple simultaneous extraction of multiple metals and metalloids from regolith. Two patented approaches are described which can operate on a planetary surface, or in the microgravity environment of orbit. This approach to isotope separation applies to regolith fines but is advantageously applied to the effluent of a patented oxygen extraction method. In this way, a plurality of valuable raw materials can be obtained with a single system, suitable for operation on the Moon or at the surface of an asteroid. Silicon is of interest for studies of purity due to its importance in photovoltaics. A silicon-aluminum aerospace alloy can be produced directly, called Si...
