Juniper Publishers - Petrography of Hypabyssal Rock at Obiulo-Lekwesi-Lokpaukwu Area Southeastern Nigeria

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract The study area is in Lokpanta Formation of southern Benue Trough sedimentary terrain, in Abia State. The rocks are believed to have developed in early Cretaceous times and igneous activity was confined to this period in the Benue Trough. Major magmatism in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic formed the hypabyssal and pyroclastic rocks, due to opening of the Trough and its associated tectonism, of this well-defined continental rift setting. The effects of the heat supplied by igneous intrusives can be observed between the host rocks shales and dolerites as metamorphic aureoles, and the other rocks formed are hornfels at Obiulo-Lekwesi area. The petrography of the rocks indicates the phenocrysts minerals like pyroxene 20%, plagioclase 35%, olivine 14% and opaque minerals of Fe-Ti oxides, while quartz is low. The dolerites were emplaced in soft sediments and they are very hard. The rocks are of economic and indust...

Juniper Publishers - Magnetizing Reduction and Magnetic Separation Studies on Low-Grade Iron Ore of Chiniot, Punjab Province, Pakistan

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract Magnetizing reduction is an important pre-treatment process used for low-grade iron ores which are difficult to upgrade by conventional beneficiation techniques. In present study, magnetizing reduction of a low-grade iron ore has been carried out followed by magnetic separation of iron minerals to produce iron concentrate. A potential process has been developed for magnetizing reduction of hematite into magnetite with domestic lignite coal. The experiments were carried out in Muffle furnace under controlled temperature conditions. The main process variables such as particle size of ore, ore to coal consumption ratio, reduction temperature and retention time were investigated to determine the extent of magnetizing reduction. In second step, reduced iron ore was subjected to low intensity magnetic separation to recover iron values in the magnetic concentrate. A single-factor variation method was applied in order to g...

Juniper Publishers - Beneficiation of a Low Rank Coal to Produce High Quality Clean Coal

Image
Insights in Mining Science & Technology Abstract A process was developed for the beneficiation of a low-rank coal containing relatively high ash (25.97%) and sulphur (5.78%) content. The low-rank sub-bituminous coal of Makerwal Area, Surghar Range, Punjab Province, Pakistan was cleaned by froth flotation technology to get high quality clean coal for commercial applications. The main parameters of froth flotation technique such as grind size of coal, pH of the pulp, % solids of the pulp, agitation (impeller rotation speed), dosage of collector, frother and depressant and slurry conditioning time were optimized to get maximum grade and recovery of coal concentrate. Froth flotation tests showed that an overall recovery of 65% was achieved on weight basis. The final clean concentrate obtained at optimum conditions contained 7.80% ash and 1.37% sulphur content. The cumulative ash was reduced up to 70.15% and sulphur up to 76.29% in the final coal concentrate. It was ...
